A DIY Guide on photographing your work

On the 3rd of March, we had the pleasure of having our third Womenfolk event ‘A DIY guide on photographing your work’ facilitated by Carrie Davenport.

Carrie Davenport is a photographer based in Belfast. You can find her work on her website www.carriedavenportphotographic.com

In this workshop, Carrie covered:

  • Basics of photography - creating a strong focal point, using exposure and white balance to get your images right, working with natural light

  • Telling a visual story with your images - so not just products but your process, portraits etc too to build a brand online

  • Different types of set up - plain backdrop, editorial styling and flat lay. What they all work best for and how to use them

  • Editing your images - using software to improve your photos, the importance of sharing your best photos not posting for the sake of it

  • Images for print and web use - important differences

  • Backing up and storing your image catalogue

This project is kindly funded by Ulster Bank.

This project is brought to you by Blick Shared Studios & Creating A Space

Video 4 - Styles of Product Photography

In this video, Carrie talks about a few variations of different types of product photography.

  1. Editorial style - which is the style of photography telling a story. You are using your product to tell the story to your customer. You are playing around with styling and background, and helping the customer imagine what your product will look like in their home.

  2. Isolated Product Shoot - this is showing off your product with nothing else around it on a white background

  3. Flat Lays - laying things out flat around your product and shooting it from above. It is good to use props but not to over clutter.
